Jim Joyce Xerox, Special to ZDNet

Summary

Managed Print Services is a strategy designed to help manage the volume of documents flowing through the organization and minimize the costs associated with printing, sharing and updating them, says Xerox’s Jim Joyce.

Commentary–From aerospace and defense contractors to financial services and healthcare providers, businesses are starting to realize the bottom line benefit to getting their output under control. They are doing this through Managed Print Services (MPS) – a defined and mature strategy designed to help manage the volume of documents flowing through the organization and minimize the costs associated with printing, sharing and updating them.

Often overlooked, print is an infrastructure just as important as facilities, telecommunications and IT networks, and the long-term results of a successful MPS partnership includes enhanced productivity, increased compliance and improved environmental sustainability, to name a few.

How do you know if your business should explore an MPS relationship? Ask yourself the following questions:

1.	Will this effort truly deliver a defined and hard dollar return on investment? Gartner says yes. According to their research, enterprises can save up to 30 percent on printing services by selecting the right partner.

2.	Are you benefiting from your current investments? Consider what went into the decision-making process for your company’s current output environment – including the current fleet of multi-vendor copiers, printers and other hardware. Is it still delivering what you need? Could it do more – like scanning and imaging for easy access to documents? You should assess the environment and also help transform key document driven business processes.

3.	Can your technology keep up? As a business changes and evolves, so must its output solution. If the current technology is unable to keep up with the demand from additional employees and increased usage, it is merely a drain on your financial and human resources. Or, if your current strategy does not provide flexibility as the total employee population fluctuates up or down, you have an opportunity for improvement. What’s more, while the economic environment may mean you need to hold onto your technology assets for a longer period of time, MPS might be able to reduce costs by combining the right technology with software, services, and proven best practices so your business can streamline workflow, eliminate time consuming manual tasks, speed up access to critical information and reduce operational costs.

4.	Does your print infrastructure support other company objectives? Implementing MPS not only tackles cost and productivity goals, but it can be a sustainable business practice too. By decreasing the number of output devices from 10,000 to 3,500, KeyCorp’s MPS strategy also addresses a corporate commitment to reduce paper consumption, decrease power usage and eliminate several tons of landfill waste. How? By strategically rationalizing the ratio of output devices to your employee population, you will reduce energy usage – leading to reduced carbon production and greenhouse gases. Eliminating unnecessary output may help save a significant amount of fresh water and trees via the reduction in the paper and pulp manufacturing process.

5.	Does downtime cost you? One of the fundamental challenges when assessing printing expenses is determining what is being spent and where. When your IT department is constantly fixing hardware while employees are unable to effectively print, scan and handle documents, all departments suffer. What’s more, printing costs are often buried in various department budgets and each employee likely has a personalized work process that may not be optimal to reducing overall printing costs. Providers utilizing Lean Six Sigma or other proven methodologies unlock the potential to save up to 30 percent of total document costs by identifying ways to eliminate errors and unnecessary steps. By leveraging intelligent network-based tools to monitor all devices, proactive management strategies can be implemented to help avoid unnecessary downtime. It is reasonable to expect your employees to have access to output as needed – 100 percent of the time.

6.	Do you have more important things to focus on than print? Most businesses do not have the print management knowledge internally to handle local, national and even global print solutions without outside help. An MPS partner brings the expertise to manage, upgrade and improve millions of devices, while empowering the workforce to embrace productivity and operational changes through effective change management programs. By assessing digital and paper document volume, related work processes and the technology that supports it, you can develop a plan that achieves the right formula for existing employee work habits, daily volume and organizational readiness for implementing new strategies.

While MPS is not a new solution, it is one that can maximize short-term cost savings, while adding value that will prime your business for growth in the future. The first step is to see your print infrastructure as a means of leveraging new sources of value.

HP announced 13 new printers and scanners, many of which target the small and
midsize business market. This new range of printers and scanners emphasizes
Web-connected printing and advanced scanning.

A new scanning technology, HP TopShot Scanning, captures six images of a
document or 3D object and combines them to create one high-quality image
suitable for print or Web. The first printer with this technology, the HP
TopShot Laserjet Pro M275, retails for$349. From May 1 thru June 114th, it is on rebate for $299.

The new HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One series and the HP Officejet Pro
ePrinter are meant to offer professional quality color documents at a 50 percent
lower cost per page than laser printers. These inkjet printers are also equipped
with ePrint, which lets you print from mobile devices by sending an email to the
printer. The 8600 All-in-One series will start at $199. Two of the current
Officejet models made PCWorld’s “Top 5″ inkjets list.

ePrint is also getting better with Wireless Direct. Now you’ll
be able to connect to a printer from a mobile device directly over peer-to-peer
Wi-Fi, without having to go through the Internet. Mobile ePrint Home and Biz
apps are available for Apple iOS, Android, and Symbian smartphones and tablets.
The ePrint Mobile Driver for PCs is supposed to make it easy to send a document
to a registered ePrint device with a “File and Print” option. And the ePrint app
for BlackBerry is getting options to print to ePrint-enabled service providers,
HP Enterprise service providers, and HP Public Print services providers.

On the scanning side, the HP Printer Control mobile app for iOS devices can
take scans from an ePrint-enabled multifunction printer and upload them to
Facebook or Google Docs, or let you scan them to an email.

In addition, HP announced new Print apps aimed at
business. Print apps are designed to give you access to pre-formatted content
you can either download directly to your printer and print without the need for
a computer, or scan directly to Internet storage. The new HP Business Apps
includes Stamps.com Web postage, apps from Shoeboxed for scanning business cards
and receipts, as well as apps from Google Docs and Box.net.

Many enterprise-level technologies are now being made available to SMBs via
HP’s recent acquisition of Printelligent. HP will begin rolling out its HP
Partner Managed Print Services over the next year.

HP is also offering a Smart Marketing Suite to address inefficiencies in
marketing. It consists of software and services, developed with Omnicom Group,
that optimize and automate marketing workflows.

Networks

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 17, 2012

HP today announced enhancements to its customer relationship management (CRM)
services that help clients engage in conversations with customers and
influencers through social media channels, gaining valuable insights that drive
business growth.

Facebook, Twitter and other social networks have changed consumer behavior
while adding a layer of complexity to the company-customer relationship.
Traditional CRM programs and architectures, designed prior to the emergence of
social networks, hinder organizations from leveraging these outlets to develop
strategies and create a framework for expansion.

The new HP
Social Enterprise Services help organizations quickly implement a social CRM
program to improve communications and engagement with customers, while also
helping them to better understand those customers. By leveraging advanced
analytics from HP Labs, the
company’s central research arm, as well as Vertica and Autonomy, both HP
companies, for structured and unstructured data, the service also improves
contact center performance and support clients’ top-line growth.

HP Social Enterprise Services incorporate social media channels into existing
contact center channels to provide organizations with a holistic view of their
customers. By integrating social media strategy, process, information,
analytics, technology and high-performance contact center teams, organizations
can rapidly deliver new products and services that are aligned with customer
requirements, establishing a solid competitive advantage.

“Leading companies, particularly in business-to-consumer industries, have
recognized the importance of tapping into customer-to-customer communications
and engaging in these social conversations,” said Joe Outlaw, principal contact
center analyst, Frost & Sullivan. “Drawing on its strong analytics
capabilities and deep CRM experience, HP has created a uniquely powerful social
CRM service. This service offers companies a full set of tools and methodologies
designed for rapid start-up and seamless broadening and deepening of social CRM
programs as strategies dictate.”

Part of HP
Customer Engagement Management, HP Social Enterprise Services provide two
service models: HP Agent Services to engage with customers in social media
channels and HP Social Media Analysis to mine the social web for information and
insights on customers. Key features include:

Listening Service – monitors a client brand or product in social media
channels to identify new engagement opportunities.

Analysis Service – leverages various analytics to gain insight into client,
competitor and industry trends to refine the company’s social media strategy.

Routing Service – directs engagement opportunities to internal stakeholders,
such as customer service, marketing, sales and product development for prompt
action.

Engagement Service – leverages insights derived from analytics to rapidly
respond to customer inquiries and comments in social media channels.

Reporting Service – provides daily snapshots, weekly summaries and monthly
reports of insights, analysis and opportunities to measure program success.

When bundled, HP Agent Services and HP Social Media Analysis allow clients to
manage customer relationships more effectively by keeping pace with social media
and analytical technologies.

“Social media has become a game changer in company-customer interactions, and
it needs to be integrated into an organization’s contact center,” said Danila
Meirlaen, vice president, Business Process Outsourcing, HP. “HP Social
Enterprise Services take customer relations to a new level with analytic tools
that make it easy to engage with customers via social networks, turning those
interactions into positive outcomes for both the customer and organization.”

Depending on the client’s specific needs, the HP Social Enterprise Services
framework is designed to leverage other pan-HP tools such as the HP Social
Intelligence Solution and proprietary assets from HP Labs.

Pricing and availability
HP Social Enterprise Services
are now available worldwide. Pricing for HP Agent Services varies depending on
client need. Pricing for Social Media Analysis Services is subscription based
and depends on the volume of services selected.

More information is available at www.hp.com/enterprise/crm.

HP’s premier client event, HP Discover, takes place June 4-7 in
Las Vegas.

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 22, 2011
——————————————————————————–

The holidays came early for families and staff at Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, Minn., when HP announced it had provided new HP TouchSmart PCs and HP Compaq Pro All-in-one PCs.

HP TouchSmart 9300 Elite Business PCs were unveiled in every Ronald McDonald House guest room, while HP Compaq 6000 Pro All-in-One Business PCs now power the staff at Ronald McDonald House.

The Ronald McDonald House team will integrate its new technologies to enhance family communications. An HP TouchSmart screen will replace a hallway whiteboard that currently lists scheduled outings, activities and crafts.

In addition, in the privacy of their own guest room, parents can use the HP TouchSmart PC to log in to their child’s patient account at the Mayo Clinic. This enables them to keep up to date on appointments and lab results, day or night.

“Ill children and families come to us from around the world. They are going through tough times,” said Linda Bonow, executive director, Ronald McDonald House. “It’s wonderful to see a child’s eyes light up because they are able to see a funny face on a family member who is thousands of miles away. With the big TouchSmart screen, it’s like they are right there in the room with them, face to face and heart to heart.”

Enabling children to connect with loved ones, access information privately

The Ronald McDonald House in Rochester provides a “home away from home” and offers support to families seeking medical care for their children. The House is home to 42 families each night, and nearly 1,000 annually.

Previously, children and their families had to share five desktops in a public area during their stay. Now, with an HP TouchSmart 9300 Elite Business PC in each room, children and their families have a personal information and communication hub for the duration of their stay.

The built-in, adjustable webcam on the HP TouchSmart PC enables families to communicate “face to face” or send a video message to friends and loved ones.(1) Families also can use the HP TouchSmart PC’s browser to access information about a new diagnosis, use entertainment features such as TV, or connect with social networks in a natural, intuitive way.

The simple touch interface enables even the youngest children to play games and helps older kids do homework with a tap of a finger. For those with neurological disorders, the touchscreen is much easier to use than a keyboard and mouse.

Working parents also appreciate having a PC in the room so they can catch up while their child is asleep. Many families have only one PC, and now other family members can keep that PC at home so everyone can stay connected.

Family care gets a makeover with new technology

HP deployed the HP Compaq 6000 Pro All-in-One Business PC for the staff at Ronald McDonald House, delivering powerful performance, high-definition (HD) visuals and energy-saving features. Its one-cord design ensured easy, out-of-the-box setup and serviceability, removed previous cable clutter and provides a more functional workspace for the Ronald McDonald House team.

The most popular staff feature of the HP 6000 is the 21.5-inch diagonal, full HD, LED backlit, HP BrightView LCD screen, which offers crisp videoconferencing for face-to-face communications.

“Technology is a powerful tool that can provide information and reassurance, which makes a huge difference for both patients and caregivers,” said John Snaider, vice president and general manager, PC Regional Business Unit – Americas, HP. “HP is providing technology that connects Ronald McDonald House staff, patients and those that care about them.”

About HP

variable-data imprinting on web offset, digital and mail printing lines at affordable prices.

“As the graphics market shifts from analog to digital printing, we are helping print service providers grow their businesses with new capabilities, enabling them to expand into new application areas and improve delivery times for high-volume digital printing,” said Jan Riecher, vice president and general manager, Graphics Solutions Business – Americas, HP. “HP is committed to creating solutions that help PSPs address their customers’ changing needs and provide tangible business results quickly.”

A decade of growth and innovation

At this year’s event, HP also is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the agreement to acquire Indigo N.V., which was announced at McCormick Place during the PRINT 01 tradeshow. Since becoming part of HP, the Indigo business has grown substantially, experiencing double-digital growth in page volume every quarter since 2003, including 23 percent growth year over year in the company’s most recent fiscal third quarter.

With more than 6,000 presses installed worldwide, including numerous installations at seven of North America’s top 10 printing firms,(1) HP Indigo liquid electrophotographic printing technology continues to be a preferred digital printing platform for offset-quality production in high-impact marketing and many other uses.

End-to-end productivity

The Lasermax Roll Systems PageReady shown at Graph Expo is now available for sale worldwide. The in-line slitter/cutter/stacker solution uses fully automated job setup features to help customers go directly from file to finished product.

Lasermax Roll Systems is one of many HP Graphics Solutions Partner program members participating with HP at Graph Expo, including CP Bourg, Datatech Smartsoft, DirectSmile, Duplo, EMT, GMC, Lumapix, Magnum Digital Solutions, Mediaclip, MindFireInc, Pageflex, Pixfizz, PressWise, Prisme Technologies, PTI Marketing Technologies, Standard Finishing, Taopix and Ultimate Technographics.

Higher productivity for HP T200 Color Inkjet Web Press

The new, high-productivity color option for the HP T200 Color Inkjet Web Press is scheduled to be available early next year.(2) The upgrade for the 20.5-inch-wide duplex press increases color printing speed up to 400 feet per minute at full black density and lower color density – twice the standard color operating speed for the T200 model.

The upgrade is available for both new and current T200 customers, allowing them to benefit from advances in inkjet technology while preserving their original capital investments. In conjunction with the speed upgrade, Pitney Bowes, which uses HP Inkjet Web Press technology in its IntelliJet™ Printing Systems family, also is announcing this higher speed color option for its IntelliJet™ 20 Printing System.

HP also announced that Appleton Coated has licensed ColorPRO technology, providing uncoated ColorPRO papers for use with HP Inkjet Web Presses. Appleton Coated’s Uncoated Inkjet with ColorPRO technology papers deliver high image quality on HP Inkjet Web Presses but do not require the use of the presses’ bonding agent.

HP Inkjet Web Press technologies continue to transform segments of the book publishing and production mail industries, offering the reliable, high-quality and high-volume manufacturing capability needed to drive adoption of digital printing. With more than 40 presses operating at customer sites worldwide, HP Inkjet Web Presses have produced more than 5 billion pages since the first commercial HP Inkjet Web Press installation in December 2008.

HP C500 Color and M500 Monochrome Print Modules

The HP C500 and M500 Print Modules complement the company’s current portfolio to help PSPs easily and effectively enhance preprinted content with variable-data imaging to increase response rates. The two new modules offer inline imprinting, delivering 600 dpi text and graphics(3) at speeds up to 500 feet per minute. These inkjet modules use the latest HP Scalable Printing Technology, including auto-switching ink containers and an automatic service station for printheads.

The HP C500 Color Print Module is an improved version of the HP C400 module, offering customers a set of new features for process color web imprinting applications, including additional speed for improved productivity and new precision rail mounting attachments for easy repositioning of the print module across the web. The C500 also will be available with larger ink supplies for longer, continuous printing in high-speed, high-volume production environments.

Three firms exhibiting at Graph Expo are showing HP C400 Print Module-equipped solutions. Pitney Bowes (booth 2010) is showing the C400 in its Print+ Messenger™ Color Inkjet System.
Transforming large-format printing to Latex platforms

As the worldwide leader in large-format digital signage and graphics printing, HP continues to advance the market’s migration away from solvent-based inkjet platforms. The company has sold more than 7,000 HP Latex Ink printers, in addition to its large installed base of HP Scitex flexible media, convertible and flatbed UV-ink printers.

PriscoDigital, an HP Graphics Elite Business Development Partner, is exhibiting the HP Scitex FB700 Industrial UV-ink flatbed printer in the Prisco (booth 201) Graph Expo exhibit.
Delivering high image quality at production speeds, the HP Scitex LX850 Industrial Printer allows customers to accelerate their wide-format workflows and handle new applications. For example, it features a built-in ink collector for direct-to-fabric printing(5) on flag fabrics, and the printer’s dual-roll, roll-to-free fall and roll-to-collector media handling offerings improve productivity. New HP LX610 Latex Scitex Inks for the printer can produce eye-catching images with rich blacks and glossy results on banners and self-adhesive vinyl.

HP’s executive sponsorship of Dscoop comes through the HP Capture business development program, which provides an extensive and growing offering of tools, training and consulting services that help PSPs profitably sell more digital printing and expand into new markets.

First webOS tablet works the way you do, introduces fun, mobile productivity on larger scale
PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 9, 2011

HP today enlarged the HP webOS world with the first webOS slate – the HP TouchPad – the breakthrough webOS user interface fully realized in the tablet experience.(1)

With its vibrant 9.7-inch diagonal flush capacitive multitouch display, virtual keyboard, instant-on access, support for Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 beta in the browser and access to thousands of webOS applications,(2) TouchPad works the way you do and is designed not just for fun but for mobile productivity. It’s ideal for anyone who wants the benefits of the amazing webOS platform on a much bigger scale.

TouchPad is one of the products HP announced today to introduce a unique experience for customers around connected mobility, offering a unified experience for the first time across a variety of devices. It’s one of the building blocks in HP’s vision to seamlessly connect all your worlds through the power of HP webOS.
“Today we’re embarking on a new era of webOS with the goal of linking a wide family of HP products through the best mobile experience available,” said Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president and general manager, Palm Global Business Unit, HP. “The flexibility of the webOS platform makes it ideal for creating a range of innovative devices that work together to keep you better connected to your world.”

Designed to be used alone or as a digital companion to your webOS phone, TouchPad connects you and your devices through the elegant webOS experience. Never miss an important call or SMS message – they can be answered and viewed right on your TouchPad.(3,4) Plus, HP’s exclusive new touch-to-share feature will let you simply touch an enabled webOS phone to your TouchPad to share web URLs.(1,5)

With the HP Synergy feature, you simply have to sign in to your Facebook®, Google, Microsoft® Exchange, LinkedIn and Yahoo!® accounts and your contacts, calendar and email automatically populate your TouchPad.(6)

TouchPad works the way you do
The TouchPad user interface is a visual representation of your workspace, so you can manage your workflow in a naturally intuitive way that’s easy and fun. The power of webOS true multitasking lets you have multiple applications running at the same time. webOS shows you your activities in the form of cards, not a sea of application icons on numerous home screens.

This helps you do all the things you want to do, all at once, so you can listen to music, update your status on Facebook, read email and chat on IM at the same time.(4,7) As you launch new activities, webOS will automatically group related cards – for example, an email and an associated web page – together in a card stack, so you can easily track all related items together.(6)

TouchPad also features a webOS communication suite powered by HP Synergy that keeps you connected and creative, making all of your communications simpler, richer and in your control. It’s a complete solution, including email, instant messaging, contacts, calendar, videos and a front-facing camera for video calling.(6) Connected photo albums make it easy to share and view your pictures directly from popular services such as Facebook, Snapfish and Photobucket. It works seamlessly with TouchPad’s user interface for a natural and efficient experience.

Around the house or on the go
TouchPad offers a great internet experience around the house or on the go, so you can manage your busy life, be productive wherever you are and stay connected with work, friends, family and social networks. It keeps you connected anywhere there’s Wi-Fi for easy access to the web and entertainment.(8)

At home, whether you’re watching TV, relaxing on the sofa, at the kitchen table or in bed, you can check in with friends, surf the web, play games or read a book, magazine or newspaper.(2) Amazon.com today announced that it will launch a free Kindle app for HP webOS tailored for TouchPad that will give you access to more than 810,000 titles from Amazon’s Kindle Store. You also can subscribe to popular magazine titles, such as Time, Sports Illustrated, Fortune and People, and download movies and TV shows through the HP Movie Store. The TouchPad music app lets you transfer and play all your favorites from your personal music collection,(9) with amazing sound quality by Beats Audio™. You can start an email, create a message, update your status, search your favorite websites – all before you’ve even opened an application. Whenever you want to do something on your TouchPad, Just Type.

Buy and sell on Amazon.com, do your banking, buy movie tickets from Fandango or check the news. Whether your thing is Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, IM, video calling or email, TouchPad brings it all together with thousands of available webOS applications and the convenience and power of HP Synergy for integrated contacts and calendar to keep your busy life on track.(6)

It’s great for road trips, on a plane, while commuting, in public places, while visiting friends and on vacation. It’s easy to pack, has a long-lasting battery and integrated GPS (3G only), and posting vacation photos is a snap.(1,10)

Mobile productivity
When productivity is key, TouchPad makes an excellent companion. You can read and write email, view your work and personal inboxes together, or easily toggle between them. Integrated messaging conveniently combines all your text messages, picture messages and IM conversations with one person into a single view, and you can connect through SMS, Google Talk, AIM and Yahoo! Messenger.(4)

TouchPad’s virtual full QWERTY keyboard includes a number row, which reduces keyboard switching, making typing easy and fast. It powers on instantly and brings you back to exactly where you left off, whether you were in the middle of composing an email, playing a game or browsing a web page. With webOS true multitasking, it’s like you never left.

For maximum productivity, HP is working with Quickoffice to include the Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite, which lets you view and edit documents, such as Microsoft Word and Excel. It also comes with VPN support to connect to corporate networks.

With its 1.3-megapixel front-facing webcam, TouchPad offers video calling capability.(11) It’s also compatible with HP’s industry-leading printing solutions, so you can wirelessly print documents, photos and emails to compatible wireless and networked HP printers.(12)

TouchPad has built-in HP Touchstone technology for easy charging, so it’s compatible out of the box with the HP Touchstone for TouchPad (sold separately), and you can charge in either portrait or landscape mode, even without removing the TouchPad case (sold separately). The webOS Exhibition feature lets you run applications designed specifically for Touchstone. Set your TouchPad on Touchstone and Exhibition launches automatically, showing you anything from today’s agenda to a slideshow of your photos.(13)

TouchPad is one of three webOS products announced today (see separate announcements for HP Veer and HP Pre3). Each product plays a distinct role in the growing webOS family, designed to meet the varying needs of customers in a rapidly evolving mobile landscape.

Availability
